Power China and Kalpataru have signed contracts worth $ 422 million for the expansion of the transmission lines for the Guyana Power and Light (GPL) in order to generate and distribute electricity from a power plant of 300 MW.
The orders are distributed in three properties, with Lots 1 and 3 to Power China ($ 256.7 million) and Lot 2 on Kalpataru ($ 156.5 million).
The Minister of the Ministry of Public Works, Deodat Indar, said that the signing of the contracts marks the beginning of the construction of the infrastructure for the future. The contracts include the construction of 155 km 230 double circuit transmission lines, 167 km 69 KV double switching transmission lines, five new substation and the upgrade of the Kingston conversation.
The new substation will take place in La Bonne intent, Enmore, Trafalgar and Williamsburg and East Berbice. The projects are expected to be completed in one year.
“The substation will be completed in June, the control center will be completed in August, all parts will be completed to get the power supply. We would therefore like to do it. So when it comes to it, it will be distributed to the country and therefore we do this today,” added Indar.
Indar requested around 13,974 new GPL customers in 2024. The interconnected system from Demerara Berbice currently offers around 230,000 customers. Indar also found that the power supply with minimal complaints about power failures on social media exists more reliability.
In 2024, the network recorded an increase of 124 MW to satisfy the growing demand for electricity. The DBIS reached a climax of 205 MW in 2024 and is expected to reach 2025 250 MW.
