Emsteel increased the expenditure for innovation and investment by 127% in 2020-2024

The company uses carbon -catching and green hydrogen to decarbonize operation

Emsteel, one of the largest listed steel and building material producers in the golf region, increased its expenses for innovation and investing from 2020 to 2024. Saeed Ghumran al RemeiithiCEO of the Emsteel Group, told Gulf Business in an interview.

Emsteel has a 10% share of Abu Dhabi's processing and a share of 60% in the VAE steel market, which exports to more than 70 countries. According to the group's CEO, the company sees, among other things, innovation as a strategic distinguishing feature that will help protect its business from market disorders, global supply chain challenges and changes in the regulatory environment in the future.

Among other things, Al Remeiithi focuses on digitization and advanced manufacturing technologies.

One of the most important innovations for the company is the Carbon Capture technology. In addition, Emsteel has teamed up with Masdar (one of the world's largest investors for renewable energies) to start his pilot project, the first of its kind in Mena, which uses green hydrogen to extract iron from iron ore. The project is now fully functional and has successfully started producing green steel.

“With a capacity of 2.1 MW, the pilot project can produce 368 tons of green hydrogen per year, so that up to 5,000 tons of green steel is made possible annually,” said the Emsteel Group CEO.

In addition to the Carbon Capture technologies and the production of environmentally friendly hydrogen steel, the company implements closed water recycling systems, initiatives for heat recovery and alternative raw materials to further improve its environmental output.

According to Al Remeiti, Emsteel has also made considerable progress in the further development of his ambitious project with carbon -rich iron supply chain. A comprehensive feasibility study for this initiative is currently underway.

In February of this year, Emsteel presented his ambitious decarbonization strategy. By 2030, the company is reducing the absolute greenhouse gas emissions in its steel department and a reduction in the cement department by 30 percent compared to the base year 2019. The final goal is not to achieve emissions by 2050.
