Federation employees would get another paid holiday to remind the workers' commemoration day under the legislation that was reintroduced in the house.
Introduced by the Member of Congress Donald Norcross (D-NJ), the Workers of the memorial day (HR 3046) suggests establishing a new federal holiday to honor American workers and to remember the American workers who were tragically lost, injured, injured or have become sick in the course of work.
The legislation was previously introduced in 2023.
The proposed federal holiday would be observed annually on April 28th. This date is important because it marks the date of the entry into force of the 1970 (p. 2193), which was issued on April 28, 1971. In 1989 the AFL-CIO began watching as a workers' memorial day on April 28 to honor the memory of workers who had lost their lives in the job.
Unions and communities remind every year in different ways to honor workers who died in the workplace.
For example, Cal/Osha watched the workers' commemoration to honor the life of the workers and to raise awareness of dangers in the workplace. The members of the IAM union observed the occasion by reading out other IAM members who died in the workplace last year in a moment of reflection.
In a statement about the invoice, Norcross said:
As an electrician, I have had the unfortunate experience of observing how hard -working Americans lose their life in the job. I introduced the workers' memorial day to remember our brothers and sisters who died in the workplace and drew more attention to the need for safe working conditions. We have made great progress in the manufacture of jobs, but kill and injure dangerous working conditions every year. Our work is far from over and as co-chair of the Labor Caucus and the lifelong Ibet union member, I will continue to fight for safer jobs and stronger health and security standards.
Other federal holidays
Federation employees currently have 11 paid federal holidays. The latest federal holiday was added in 2021 with the addition of Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
Other recently proposed federal holidays are Easter, St. Patrick's Day, Diwali, Lunar New Year and Rosa Parks Day.
