OSHA renews its national focus on amputations in the production industry

On June 27, 2025, the US Ministry of Health of the US Ministry of Labor renewed its national focus on amputations in the production industry (NEP) and replaced the previous version. This new NEP will be available for five years and via updated guidelines for the national, regional and local offices of OSHA as well as for its advisory programs and state plans on site.1

The NEP focus is still on preventing amputations. In particular, it tries to identify, reduce or avoid dangers from machines or devices in production and industrial jobs that can lead to amputations.

Specific inspection criteria are listed in the NEP, including an explanation of the inspection initiated in this NEP, the parameters for an opening conference and Walkaround considerations for the Compliance Safety and Health Officer (CSHO) and training courses for CSHOs, which carry out inspections under the NEP.

The renewed NEP enables a facility in which an inspection after the NEP has been initiated in the past 24 months and no amputations from the programmed inspection list should be removed during this period.

Additional changes from the previous NEP are:

  • Reviation of the NAICS facility codes (North American Industry Code System), which are included in the NEP;2
  • Reviation of the methodology used to set certain industries;3
  • Enables the expansion of unprocessed inspections to an amputation of NEP inspection only if the NAICS code is contained in Appendix B of the updated NEP;
  • Specific criteria for inspection planning;
  • Exception of the participating voluntary protection program (VPP) of Osha's programmed inspection list of the targeted locations during the duration of their approved participation in the VPP;
  • Liberation of inspections among the NEP facilities with 10 or fewer employees and a primary NAICS code that is included in the “Low Hazard Industry Table” of the appropriation law; And
  • Review of the coding instructions for OSHA Information Systems (OIS) in Section VII for all OSHA amputation inspections.

At the exhibition of this NEP, Osha makes it clear that many new types of industries are folded into the mixture of amputation -related inspections. Thesis Industries Include, For Example, Soybean and other Oilseed Processing, Beet Sugar Manufacturing, Cane Sugar Manufacturing, Frozen Specialty Food Manufacturing, Fruit and Vegetable Canning, Spice And Extract Manufacturing, Soft Drink Manufacturing, Bottled Water Manufacturing, Hardwood Veneer and Plywood Manufacturing, Cut Stone and Stone Product Manufacturing, Farm Machinery and Equipment Manufacturing, Iron Foundries, Steel Foundries (Except Investment), Aluminum Foundries, Padded Household Furniture and Automotive Card.

Each employer covered by the NEP for production should use OSHA's announcement to visit his health and security programs and procedures again. This review should also ensure that all relevant machine guards are available, the obligation to protect the blocks are updated and the employees are sufficiently trained by preventing amputations. Employers with questions or concerns about the NEP or their health and security programs should contact an expert security lawyer at the workplace.
