The Berlin State Library (State Library in Berlin) works with Siemens to reduce energy consumption, reduce its CO₂ emissions and to better protect valuable cultural assets.

To achieve this, Siemens installed intelligent building technology, which reduces energy consumption by 52 percent and saves 3,745 tons of CO₂ per year.

At the same time, the new technology in the entire building ensures stable temperature and moisture levels – for the preservation of the more than 32 million media articles of the library in the long run.

The project costs – around € 20 million – are fully covered by guaranteed savings on energy costs. This is made possible by energy savings, a service that Siemens offers publicly and private customers.

“With guaranteed energy costs, this cooperation serves as a draft for the achievement of sustainability goals for millions of cultural institutions around the world.”

The State Library of Berlin project is part of the company's continuous cooperation with Berlin's cultural buildings that started in 2014. The library's Potsdamer Strasse building is a protected historical complex with around 106,000 square meters of gross floor area. The Siemens project is carried out as part of the Federal Government's decarbonization program and contributes to the goal of the 2030 program to reduce CO₂ emissions from state buildings by 65 compared to its 1990 levels.

The new technologies installed by Siemens include the Desigo Building Automation System, Room Operator Units, Sensors and a Cloud-based energy and asset management platform. The ventilation is optimized by flexible systems for heating, ventilation and air conditioning. In addition, 5,300 LED lights consume up to 80 percent less electricity than the old conventional lighting of the building.
