The North End Connectors Consortium has received a contract for USD 1.4 billion (USD 1.01 billion) from Infrastructure Ontario (IO) and Metrolinx for the Yonge North Subway Extension Project in Canada.
This project, which is financed by the Canadian government with 2.24 billion C $, includes the construction of Twin 6.3 km from Finch Station on TTC line 1 to a point south of the Langstaff Road in Markham, where it is transferred to a segment at surface level.
The consortium includes Aecon Infrastructure Management, Fomento de Construciones and Contratas Canada, and Ghella Canada, which enter into both the components and the lead roles of the applicant.
The design is managed by Exp Services and Typa, while the financial consultancy of National Bank Financial, AECON concessions, Fomento de Construciones Y Contratas Canada and Ghella Investments & Partners is provided.
This project is carried out as part of a contract with design building financing, whereby the public-private partnership model (P3) is used by IO.
Prabmeet Sarkaria, Minister of Transport on Tario, said: “Today we take a big step forward when we build Yonge's U -Bahn extension of Yonge North, revolutionize travel through the region and for the first time expand access to Vaughan, Markham and Richmond Hill.
“In view of the economic uncertainty and the US tariffs that continue to target workers and companies throughout the province, we protect Ontario's economy by building up the next generation of U -Bahn services that connect OnTarians for the coming years with thousands of well -paid jobs and apartments.”
Early work is in progress, with the most important construction work begin after the design phase.
The tunnel route extends from the Yonge Street from the Finch Station to the north and bends east on Bay Thorn Drive south of the Langstaff Road.
The scope of work as part of the project includes design and construction of start and extraction waves, twin tunnels, emergency exit buildings as well as the procurement and installation of tunnel boring machines and concrete tunnels before concrete.
The Yonge North U-Bahn extension is expected to make more than 90,000 daily trips easier and another 26,000 people will bring 10 minutes within a transit walk.
It is expected that the travel times from Markham to downtown Toronto will be reduced by up to 22 minutes and the personal vehicle trip will be reduced by 7,700 km during rush hour.
In addition, the project is expected to generate more than 3.6 billion C $ in economic advantages and support around 4,300 jobs per year during the construction.
Michael Lindsay, President and CEO of Metrolinx, said: “With this contract award, we provide the prerequisites for a great construction of the Yonge North U -Bahn extension.
“This project will further expand the TTC Line 1 -U -Bahn -Service north to the York region and establish connections to the GO and Viva Transit networks.”
