US-based 3D concrete printing company ICON a project announced was underway to build 100 3D Concrete Printed (3DCP) homes for the chronically homeless and homeless in Texas, USA.
The ICON Project is a partnership with the Lennar Foundation, a non-profit arm of US-based home builder Lennar.
The cohort is building the structures under development with Austin-based nonprofit Mobile Loaves & Fishes (MLF) as part of an expansion of their existing Community First! Village (CFV) for unhoused men, women and families.
The expansion area covers 127 hectares and is expected to house around 1,800 formerly homeless people once the two-stage project is completed. In total (in addition to ICON and Lennar's 100 3DCP homes), MLF said the expansion will add a total of 1,400 homes, which it said will increase the footprint to 178 acres and 1,900 homes and supporting structures.
The 100 3DCP ICON and Lennar homes will be a mix of townhomes and single-family homes ranging in size from 380 to 1,040 square feet.
According to local mediaThe estimated cost of the project is more than $100 million.
This is not the first collaboration between the advocacy group Mobile Loaves & Fishes and ICON: in 2020The construction printing company delivered a “row” of houses at the same location. In a press release this month, ICON said it had previously provided 17 homes and facilities for CFV over a four-year period.
An expected completion date for the project was not known.
