San Francisco – A recruit of San Francisco Police died on Friday, two days after a medical emergency after training at the police academy, the department said.
It was believed that it is the first training death in the history of the police department.
The 30-year-old recruiter Jon-Marques Psalms was training in the third month of about eight months when he suffered the emergency on Wednesday, the police said in an announcement.
“The medical staff treated him on site before the paramedics brought him to the hospital,” the police said in a statement. “Unfortunately he died in the hospital on Friday.”
Psalms was one of 55 recruits that started the academy class 286 on May 9. The training was part of a course that was required by the State Commission for Peace Commissioner Standards and Training, according to the department.
“The death of a recruit at the academy is incredibly unusual and tragic,” said the department. “This is the first death of a recruit during the training that the SFPD is known about.”
The mayor of San Francisco, Daniel Lurie, said that the loss of a police officer was a “tragedy”, but the loss of a recruit that committed himself to this police and the security of our community was particularly painful. “
“When I spoke to the parents of Psalms from Psalms in the last few few days, they told me about the meaning he found from his work and his group of recruits,” said Lurie in a statement. “He was so looking forward to graduating with everyone and joining the ranks of the SFPD.”
Departments did not immediately answer questions about the type of medical emergency or training exercise.
“The Chief Medical Examiner office will carry out an investigation and issue a report on the cause of death,” said the police authority.
The department carries out its own investigation and the state department for security and health of professional security, known as Cal/Osha, checks the incident as death at the workplace, the police said.
According to the department, Psalms grew up in South California. A LinkedIn list for Psalms said he completed the University of Louisiana in Lafayette in 2017 with a bachelor's degree in oil technology.
He worked in the Tech industry before entering the department, the police said.
From February 2016 to June 2017, Psalms volunteered as head coach for a Catholic middle school, according to LinkedIn.
