Philadelphia, PA – The Philadelphia Zoo has received a new accreditation from the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA), which has marked continuous recognition for compliance with the highest standards of the profession for more than 50 years. The zoo has been one of only two institutions across the country since 1984 to maintain an uninterrupted accreditation.
The AZA accreditation process is considered a gold standard for zoos and aquariums. It includes a detailed application, a multi-day on-site inspection of independent experts and a formal hearing before the accreditation commission. Facilities are assessed in terms of animal supply and veterinary services, nature conservation work, personnel training, educational programs, financial stability, governance and guest experience. The accreditation is granted in a five -year cycle.

The AZA inspection committee praised the animal care staff of Philadelphia Zoos as “experienced and enthusiastic” and noticed their “passion, commitment and progress in the well -being of animal”. The inspectors also emphasized that animal areas were “exceptionally clean [and] Well maintained. “
The Philadelphia Zoo received financial support from the city in order to meet the standards of the facility required in the accreditation process.
In the United States and 12 other countries there are now 254 AZA accredited institutions. US agencies, including Osha and the USDA, recognize AZA standards as a benchmark for the evaluation of zoos and aquariums.
