Federal Worker-Safety Commission has no members when the gap grows

The federal authority, monitoring the disputes of security violations in the workplace, also in meat packaging systems, has been without leadership for more than five months.

The Commission for Occupational Safety and Health, a company that is independent of both occupational safety and health administration, has not had a commissioner since the beginning of May.

The three-person commission, which checks the business complaints of OSHA fines and injuries, has been plagued by residue and procedural slowdowns for years. According to a newsroom investigation, this led to residues of security checks in March 2025 and to a recorded appeal procedure.

If a case is checked, companies are not legally obliged to make security changes and pay fines.

Currently, 31 cases are waiting for the review of the members of the members to the Commission, with some from 2017.

The appeal procedure for companies that are occupied due to security violations for jobs is divided into two parts as part of the Commission. First, a case check is carried out by one of 12 administrative judges. If a company still contests the results of the judges, the Commission makes a final decision.

Since 2015, the time when the judges work with OSHRC has risen from less than 18 months to over two years, as the analysis of hundreds of calls in the middle west examined.

This longer review process occurred, while the number of cases before taking back noble fell by more than half.

A spokesman for the Commission confirmed the lack of commissioners and quorum, but announced that the work of the judges of the Commission “is not directly influenced by the current lack of commissioners”.

The Commission has had a single member since April 2023 who retired this April. The Commission has had free positions since 2021.

The bidges management nominated two commissioners, but their appointments were canceled by the confirmation calendar at the end of the Senate meeting of 2024.

In March, President Trump nominated Jonathon Snare to the Commission. Snare was appointed deputy lawyer for the US Ministry of Labor in February. Previously, from 2003 to 2009 he worked for the Osha and the Ministry of Labor and then worked as a lawyer for private jobs for the DC law firm of Morgan Lewis & Bockius.

The Senate Committee, which is responsible for the confirmation of new commissioners, has not yet held confirmation for Snare. The investigation of the middle west went to the committee management, Senator Bill Cassidy, a Republican in Louisiana, and Senator Bernie Sanders, a democrat in Vermont, received no answer.

In a report on an investigation report in March 2025, he stated that the Commission has been without quorum for over a year for over a year and did not check a single case in the 2024 financial year. Earlier violations of the Osha, which were examined, included two separate deaths in a Georgia poultry processing, one of which was the death of a 16-year-old Guatemalan immigrant, which worked too young to work out.

The Osha punished a fine after a worker died. While the case was inserted, another worker was killed.

The little -known Commission for Security and Health Checking Occupational Safety and Health takes longer for the complaint of Osha fines and certificates to be checked. Now the three-person commission is about to lose its only member.

Milton Jones, President of the United Food and Commercial Workers International Union, said in a statement on the investigation of the Middle West that the Commission was made useless without Oshrc commissioner, so that employers can postpone the implementation of security solutions and the payment of fines for violations of earlier violations, the endangerment of employees across the country.

“If cases are not heard, the workers die and without a functioning commission it will only happen more often to escape this process to escape responsibility,” said Jones.
