Connor McDavid isn't going anywhere now.
The 28-year-old NHL superstar is committed to the Oilers for at least a few more years as he and the team agreed to a two-year, $25 million contract extension on Monday that will keep him in Edmonton through the 2027-28 season.
The average annual value of $12.5 million is the same as he has been since his eight-year, $100 million contract started the 2018-19 season.
“Our journey here continues,” McDavid wrote on X along with several photos from Oilers games with the 2025-26 NHL season starting Tuesday.
McDavid was entering the final year of his contract, and the center's future has been the subject of speculation over the past four months since the Oilers fell to the Panthers in the Stanley Cup Final for the second straight season.
The short-term expansion during the Oilers' current window to compete for a Cup still leaves questions about McDavid's long-term future.
The NHL salary cap will rise over the next few years, so McDavid could be in line for a monster payday later, but he's taking a big discount in the meantime to keep the Oilers competitive.
Last Tuesday, the Minnesota Wild signed winger Kirill Kaprizov to an eight-year, $136 million contract extension. The total value and $17 million AAV are both NHL records.
In 712 regular season games, McDavid has 361 goals and 721 assists. The three-time Hart Trophy winner has led the NHL in points in five of his 10 seasons.
He had 26 goals and 74 assists in 67 regular-season games last season before scoring seven goals and 26 assists in 22 playoff games.
