Kitchen makes an artistic statement

Kitchen makes an artistic statement

Bethesda, Md – Jim Rill and his team from Rill Architects had renovated a large part of this Chevy Chase, MD House, and left the kitchen and a bathroom on the ground floor as the last holdout.

During the entire transformation, the goal was to remain true to the modern architecture of the mid -century and at the same time to accept a clean and atmospheric atmosphere that made an artistic statement.

“Sometimes the modernity of the middle of the century can be bright with many different colors,” says the director of the architectural company in Bethesda, MD, who states that Anamargarita Baasch from Baasch Gallegos Architects served as project architects. “But in this special case we wanted a quiet and refined design that was very functional and slim … something that could be a work of art.”

Adds a touch of contemporary flair

Promotes a calm and sophisticated design

Serves as a playful feature for the kitchen

In the kitchen, which translated into a foundation of custom -made cupboards by Danish builders who were painted in the back of the classic gray/brown mouse by Farrow & Ball, which tends a bit green, depending on how the light shines on it. The doors and drawers in SLAB style are built without visible hardware to get a clean look. This hand-free design is also used on the refrigerator and freezer panels, so that the Miele devices mingle seamlessly between their stored neighbors, which hides their true identity. In addition, an open shelf on the island and on floating wall shelves, which are positioned in several places in the kitchen, is painted in the same color as the cupboards and offer exhibition space and functional storage.

“These customers are very neat and keep things neat and neat, so that open shelves work well for them,” says Rill.

Promotion of mood

The warm and earthy color of the cabinet helps to establish the desired atmospheric topic selected by the worktop, the Reliance Quartz 'Bellini Quartz for the scope and a mixture of quartz and wood for the island. The latter has a waterfall edge detail to present the delicate veins within the material looking from stone.

“We wanted to have fun with the island and make it a playful feature for the kitchen,” he explains. “Our idea behind the mixture of materials was to break a little and create some areas of the distinction. For example, the seating area where our customers are sitting and a cup of coffee or a quick breakfast will be defined by the wood. The wood also adds a little more warmth and is more interesting than just one material.”

The wood pushing on the island reflects the tones of the existing wooden floor, which is accentuated with archestra Braun 12 “X24” porcelain tiles in the area between the Miele area and the island.

“The majority of the floor is wood, so we wanted to break the scale with a second material,” he says. “We also used tiles in this section because it is such a high use, so that the additional durability of the tile is advantageous in the long term.”

In addition to the floor, Rill used large format porcelain tiles than several back splashes in the kitchen. Behind the stainless steel -zephyr ventilation hood, he concluded in a polished finish Archessa's ash tile. The expansion from the worktop to the ceiling adds the focus, while its horizontal straight stacked pattern gives a bit of contemporary flair, which is passed on by the fabric of the tile, which stands side by side with stone.

Archessa's warm white, unglazed tile gives the back splash behind the floating shelves and between the Miele wall and the steam oven brightness. His light color captivates into the ceiling, which is accentuated with wooden ceiling rays.

“There were a few existing rays, but we added a few more to give it a better composition than accidentally,” explains Rill.

The ceiling is also accentuated with LED flush-mount lighting bodies from Kuzco instead of traditional recessed lights.

“Intention lights can look a bit like Swiss cheese or domino stones.

Ensure success

In order to improve the functionality of the kitchen, Rill and his team configured the area behind the cooking wall so that it comprises a small walk -in pantry. Before that, the area was a powder room and a washroom/a closet/hall that connected the kitchen with the garage. After the renovation, the same area now includes the pantry and a mudroom and washroom with access to the garage.

“The pantry is important for the success of the kitchen,” he notes. “These customers are very well organized and properly organized, but since the kitchen is so slim and clean with many open shelves, they needed a place where they can store things like mixers, grinds and other small devices and dry goods.”

This storage is easily accommodated via open shelves and pull -out drawers of the cupboards, which are internally painted in Farrow & Balls Salon with stained wood. Bellini Quartz from Reliance Quartz serves as a spacious worktop.

The last phase of the renovation of this house also included a conversion of a bathroom on a lower level, which was transformed into a spa-like space that offers a calming color palette, a wet room and luxurious accessories such as a Runtal omnipanel towel cooler.

“The lower level is basically a Zen room for our customers,” indicates Jim Rill, adding that it serves a gym, a recreation room and a bedroom. “They wanted the bathroom to be a place where they could relax and relax after training.”

In order to accommodate, the Wet Room has a Kohler-Steam shower with its Hansgrohe shower heads and a free-standing, matt black tub in a spa-like environment with calm, neutral colors with a button from 'Art', which is shown by Tilebars Brando Porcelain.

“It was fun to play with the complicated tiled pattern,” he says. “It serves as a piece of subtle, elegant art for space.”

In addition, Tile gives a statement behind the individually floating TRUEFORM Concrete Ramp Speek, in which Archestas SAS 3.5 -CHE -X12 glossy tiles in a lagoon color is stacked horizontally from the floor to the ceiling in order to promote a harmonious atmosphere.
