Modernization of the airport and the convention center

Passenger traffic at Palm Springs International Airport is expected to double from 3.2 million 6.4 million passengers in the next decades. A $2.2 billion master plan seeks to modernize the airport while maintaining its distinctive charm. A new parking garage and car rental facility are planned, and new routes, including nonstop service to Newark, are enticing travelers to fly locally.

Meanwhile, Oak View Group, which operates Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, has acquired the Palm Springs Bureau of Tourism and Convention Center and is overseeing a $98 million expansion there that will create outdoor event space, better transportation and a new east entrance to accommodate concurrent events. A study by Convention Sports & Leisure estimates the improvements could generate $3.4 billion in economic output over 30 years, create 1,300 jobs and increase annual attendees' spending from $43 million to $66.6 million. By the way, the Convention Center sold out the city's first AI and Creativity Expo and will be held again in 2026 as part of the city's focus on technology initiatives.

Strengthen economic opportunities

The City of Palm Springs is investing $1 million over the next two years to support economic development in key sectors including food service, hospitality, retail and the arts.

“We’re not just talking about growing the economy,” Olson says. “We're funding it. A new economic development plan will guide the process, and a revision of the 40-year-old zoning code will simplify development rules and remove barriers to new jobs and housing.

Through October 2025, residents and visitors can pick up a Love Local digital gift card to use at more than 120 local businesses and earn bonus money backed by $150,000 in city funds.

The city has recognized four distinct business districts, with more to come, and is funding Caravanserai, an alliance supporting entrepreneurs from underserved communities.
