AIA and Green Building Initiative Announce Collaborative Agreement to Accelerate Leadership in Building Design

WASHINGTON – November 10, 2025 – The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and the Green Building Initiative (GBI) have announced a collaboration to accelerate sustainability, health and wellness, and resilience in the built environment and achieve global goals. This collaboration expands each organization's resources to enable increased collaboration between GBI and AIA members.

“GBI and AIA National are jointly committed to transforming the built environment to create a sustainable future for all,” said Vicki Worden, CEO of GBI. “GBI regularly collaborates with AIA members in the areas of education, advocacy and standards development. This agreement formalizes GBI's collaborative efforts at the AIA national level and provides additional opportunities to expand offerings to our shared communities to support carbon-neutral, efficient and resilient buildings.”

Examples of collaboration opportunities arising from this agreement include:

  • Jointly promote AIA climate initiatives and commitment programs within the green building community and GBI members.
  • Sharing information about and opportunities to shape GBI's ANSI-recognized standards, such as Green Globes®, and its programs, such as Journey to Net Zero™.
  • Conference promotion for the AIA Annual Architecture and Design Conference along with the GBI Better Buildings Seminar Series, including the Data Center Seminar, Learning Labs, and Project of the Year.

“A formal collaboration between AIA and GBI creates a powerful new opportunity to advance our shared mission: improving the impact of the built environment on climate and society,” said Stephen Ayers, FAIA, interim CEO of AIA. “Although our members have been working together for years, this cooperation agreement will significantly expand our capacity for future joint initiatives.”

The agreement signals a powerful collaboration between two organizations that advance sustainability in the built environment from the grassroots level to federal initiatives. Under the agreement, the two nonprofits will promote shared goals and leverage shared networks to advance technical expertise and improve the built environment's impact on climate and society.
