A4174: Sustainable travel improvements completed

A series of sustainable transport improvements along the A4174 ring road have been substantially completed, with over 4km of improved cycle and pedestrian routes between Wick Wick roundabout and Coldharbour Lane.

The work includes new paths, widening of existing paths, resurfacing and new pedestrian crossings. An additional left lane for vehicles on Coldharbour Lane has also been added, along with new speed limits on parts of the ring road, to make the improved paths safer to use and meet road design requirements.

These changes are part of a wider regional program to make walking, cycling/cycling and public transport not only practical, but also the preferred way of getting around – particularly for shorter journeys.

The final stages of resurfacing the ring road and improving the traffic lights at the Quakers Road junction are still underway and are due to be completed by mid-December. A new northbound lane from Wick Wick roundabout to the M4 overpass and two southbound lanes to the roundabout will be completed in conjunction with the National Highways bridge replacement works.

Councilor Sean Rhodes, Cabinet Member for Communities and Local Places, said: “The completion of the A4174 improvements is an important milestone in our work to provide more sustainable travel options across South Gloucestershire.”

“We want to offer people more travel options to encourage a transition away from cars, reduce congestion and emissions and improve air quality.

“We would like to thank residents and road users for their patience as we delivered this project and hope that many local people can benefit from the improved infrastructure.”

Helen Godwin, Mayor of the West of England, said: “It's great to see these improvements along the A4174 have been completed. New and improved cycle paths and footpaths along this important route in South Gloucestershire will make a huge difference to people's everyday journeys.”

“If we lay the foundations by repairing our region’s roads and bridges and improving public transport, walking and cycling opportunities, we will lay the foundations for an overall better transport system in the West of England.”

“In the long term, thanks to the record £752m we secured for future transport investment in the summer’s spending review, we can get the west out of the slow lane and catch up with other city regions with better buses, more trains and local transport plans.”

Funding for the improvements was approved in late 2024 and construction began in February 2025. The total cost of the project is expected to be £15.3 million and will be funded by the Department for Transport through the City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement secured by the West of England Mayoral Combined Authority.
