HKS named architect for new DC soccer stadium

HKS Inc., Dallas, has been selected to design a new stadium for the Washington Commanders National Football League team in Washington, DC

The approximately 65,000-seat indoor stadium is part of a $3.7 billion public-private partnership between team owners and the city to redevelop a 180-acre campus next to the Anacostia River. As well as hosting more than 200 games, concerts and other planned events per year, the stadium will be the centerpiece of a multi-pronged development program that includes the construction of more than 5,000 new and retained leisure facilities, as well as possible hotel and retail space. Almost a third of the campus will be dedicated to improving green spaces.

Over the next few months, HKS and commanders will develop the stadium concept and schematic design, followed by a series of community engagement meetings. A statement from HKS said sustainability, advanced technology, an enhanced fan experience and increased sponsorship integration will be at the forefront as the stadium design progresses.

Vertical construction of the stadium is expected to begin in spring 2027, with full completion scheduled for 2030. No contractor has been named, although media reports say Bethesda, Maryland-based Clark Construction did the preconstruction work.

Following a December 2024 congressional resolution, the city gained administrative control of the campus from the National Park Service, eliminating longstanding restrictions that had hampered previous redevelopment efforts. RFK Stadium, which previously stood on the site, is in the final stages of demolition.
