The Government has signed a contract worth $409,837.67 with No Limit Construction Services Ltd to install a new lighting system at the AO Shirley Recreation Ground.
The Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) said the agreement marked another milestone in the development of the territory's sports infrastructure and confirmed that the installation of lighting fixtures at the National Stadium would be covered.
“The contract valued at $409,837.67 was awarded to No Limit Construction Services Ltd,” an RDA Facebook post said.
During the signing ceremony, Education Minister Sharie de Castro welcomed the launch of the long-awaited project and thanked it for moving forward. She highlighted the AO Shirley Recreation Ground as the most active sporting and leisure facility in the region and noted the likely impact of the upgrade on athletes, students and the wider community.
The RDA said the facility is expected to meet IAAF Class 2 standards once the work is completed. It added that the improved lighting will support safe and modern use of the site for sport and recreation.
The AO Shirley Recreation Ground is described by the government as the region's premier sports training and competition site and hosts athletics, football and rugby.
The new award follows an earlier phase of work at the venue. In January 2020, the Virgin Islands Recovery and Development Agency (RDA) signed two contracts with CW General Maintenance and Caribbean Environmental Restoration Limited totaling $860,233.14 for stadium lighting and grandstand repairs as part of the broader AO Shirley project.
According to the press release, the lighting contract is part of ongoing efforts to make the AO Shirley Recreation Ground a major venue for sports and community activities in the Virgin Islands.
