January 21 – The Foundation for Building has long been at the forefront of initiatives that prioritize sustainable development, and its Build Green New Mexico (BGNM) program is a shining example of that commitment. As we move further into the 21st century, the importance of green building practices becomes more apparent. BGNM is leading the way toward a more sustainable and energy efficient future for New Mexico.
What is Build Green New Mexico?
Build Green New Mexico is a program launched in 2006 as part of the foundation's corporate mission. It was the only program the FFB had for several years until Tree Green New Mexico was launched four years ago. The program is designed to promote and facilitate green building practices in New Mexico. A voluntary certification initiative, it provides builders and developers with a framework for creating high-performance, energy-efficient and environmentally conscious buildings. By adhering to BGNM guidelines, construction projects can significantly reduce their environmental footprint while improving the comfort, health and affordability of homes and commercial spaces.
The goals and standards of the BGNM
Build Green New Mexico's primary goal is to ensure buildings meet rigorous standards for energy efficiency, water conservation and indoor air quality. This is achieved by:
Energy Efficiency: Incorporating advanced technologies and materials that reduce energy consumption. Water conservation: Implementing systems that minimize water waste and promote efficient use. Sustainable Materials: Promote the use of renewable, recycled and locally sourced materials. Indoor Air Quality: Ensuring Building Quality Ensure a healthy living and working environment by reducing pollutants and improving ventilation.
The program's certification process is based on a points system that allows builders to achieve different levels of recognition, such as Silver, Gold or Emerald, depending on their compliance with the guidelines.
Foundation for the role of the building
The Bauen Foundation plays a central role in the further development of the BGNM mission. By leveraging its resources, expertise and network, the Foundation actively supports builders and developers in adopting green building practices. Key contributions include:
Education and Training: Conducting workshops, seminars and training sessions to educate industry professionals on the benefits and methods of sustainable construction. Advocacy: Promoting policies and incentives that promote green building practices at the local and state levels. Community Engagement: Raising awareness among New Mexicans about the value of sustainable building and how it contributes to a healthier environment and lower operating costs. Technical support: Advising builders during the certification process to ensure successful project completion.
The Program's Impact on New Mexico
BGNM had a profound impact on the state. Certified buildings in New Mexico have demonstrated significant reductions in energy consumption, resulting in lower utility bills for residents and businesses. By minimizing waste and using sustainable materials, these projects help conserve natural resources and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. The green construction sector has created jobs, spurred innovation in the construction industry and boosted the local economy.
The Foundation for Building is committed to expanding its reach and impact in the coming years. As the challenges of climate change intensify, the need for sustainable building practices will only increase. Through ongoing collaboration, advocacy and innovation, these organizations aim to make green building the standard, not the exception, throughout New Mexico. By prioritizing environmental protection, economic resilience and community well-being, they lay the foundation for a greener, healthier and more prosperous state.
