Airbus and Japan Airlines join Biofustüfen Collaborative

TOKYO Airbus, Japan Airlines, Nippon Paper Industries, Sumitomo Corporation and Green Earth Institute signed a memorandum of understanding to work together to develop a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), which comes from bioethanol from native wood.

The collaboration results from the Morisora project initiated in February 2023 by Nippon Paper, Sumitomo Corporation and Green Earth. An agreement was signed last month to create and sell a joint venture for the production and sale of bioethanol from wooden biomass. Airbus and Jal then joined the project and will promote the use and expansion of domestic SAF by working with companies that are involved in SAF's supply and demand.

The plans require the five companies to enable a low -carbon society by reducing greenhouse gas emissions during raw material procurement and production and bioethanol with domestic wood base with a low life cycle analysis (※ 2). This is achieved by the circular economy of the developing society of “cutting, use, planting and growth”, regional revitalization including the creation of jobs and the use of domestic SAF.

Jal aims to promote SAF in Germany and has set itself the goal of replacing 10% of the total fuel by SAF by SAF by 2030. By connecting the SAF suppliers with the stakeholders involved in the production, Jal will push ahead with the construction of a supply chain. Airbus will support the work to maintain the carbon offset and reduction scheme for the international aviation certification for the domestic wood biomass of this project and to contribute to the goal of the industry goal to achieve carbon emissions of zero-zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The five companies have undertaken to use their strengths to produce domestic SAF from Bioethanol with the help of domestic wood in order to create a decarbonized society and to revitalize local communities through resource circulation and to work on a sustainable future.
