Bengaluru: Sustainability is no longer a choice but a necessity as the world grapples with the consequences of climate change and resource depletion. Known for its innovation and vibrant community spirit, Bengaluru is at the forefront of adoption sustainable practices.
From startups that promote circular economy and environmentally conscious technologies For architects who preserve heritage and artists who use sustainable materials, some firms in the city are setting an example of urban resilience and environmental responsibility.
Eco Dhaga recently collected around 6,800 kilograms of post-consumer textiles. The used or discarded clothes were recycled and turned into fancy placemats and coasters. “It also enabled us to reduce waste in landfills,” said Sanjana Swaroop, founder of Eco Dhaga.
Sanjana spoke about it Circular economy and what her organization did in that space, at a panel discussion on sustainable design moderated by MXR co-founder Madan Mohan Rao at M Cube Spaces here on Saturday. “The fashion industry is one of the biggest polluters. We are trying to create awareness about what you can do to improve the environment with your wardrobe itself,” said Sanjana.
Some startups like Reusall are developing software solutions for sustainability. “We are building an intuitive app and impact dashboard to help you track your footprint and habits,” said Shravan Boska, founder of the Hyderabad and Bengaluru-based startup.
Masons Ink focuses on three areas: sustainable buildingMonument preservation and social architecture. Sridevi Changali, co-founder and principal architect of Masons Ink, believes that it is important to extend the lifespan of buildings to achieve the goal of sustainability. “Buildings that were built 100 or 200 years ago still stand beautifully today,” she said, adding that there is a lot to learn from them.
In her opinion, there is definitely a noticeable increase in inquiries about sustainable building practices. “Nowadays there are many people interested in adobe houses. Whether it is a trend or whether it is here to stay, we will see in the next 10 years,” she said.
Sustainability is also the buzzword in art. Priyanka Thaker, founder of the art studio House of Beserk, is conscious about how she packs and ships her installations. “We also try to work with materials like terracotta that come from the earth,” Priyanka said.
