Bio Graphene Solutions (BGS) announced that it has completed a commercial pilot concrete pour with EllisDon Corporation, a global construction services and technology company, and Tomlinson Ready Mix, one of the largest concrete suppliers in Ottawa and part of the Tomlinson Group of Companies.
The company's proprietary graphene-enhanced admixture was integrated into the operations of a Tomlinson Ready Mix 32MPa C-2 pavement concrete pour on an active construction project managed by EllisDon's Ottawa team. The Biographen-enriched concrete mix used 10% less cement than the control mix without compromising the fresh properties of the concrete. This pilot test is a critical milestone in demonstrating the in-situ performance of the Biographen-enriched mix and validates laboratory testing that demonstrated the concrete achieves the targeted 28-day strength of 32 MPa within 7 days.
Jolene Mclaughlin, Vice President of Climate and Sustainability at EllisDon, commented: “EllisDon is committed to being at the forefront of how sustainability is changing the face of construction and what is expected for the future of the industry. The implementation of innovative and new technologies, such as BGS's graphene admixture solution, is a great example of how materials science can drive meaningful change in reducing embodied carbon. Implementing such innovations on our construction sites can enable our company, in collaboration with our subcontractor partners, to develop some of the most sustainable concrete structures in Canada. We look forward to the successful completion of this project with BGS and our other partners.”
“As a concrete supplier, it is critical that new technologies cost-effectively increase the performance results of our concrete mixes, but more importantly, can be easily and painlessly integrated into our existing operational process flow,” said Francis Brazeau, general manager of Tomlinson Ready Mix. “We were very encouraged to see first-hand how BGS's Admix solution was able to withstand real-world conditions present in the plant and on site that are simply not captured in controlled laboratory testing.” This endurance is important because it Creating confidence in BGS's product while being able to meet the design specifications required by our customers for our concrete mixes. We look forward to exploring how BGS’s Admix solution can add value to other potential mix designs we cast.”
David Fisher, CEO of BGS, commented: “We are very fortunate to be able to work with partners like EllisDon and Tomlinson who support innovative and new technologies. In a market that is typically resistant to change, it is important to highlight that there are sustainable and cost-effective solutions, such as our graphene admixture product, that can add meaningful value to the construction supply chain in a non-invasive way. We look forward to the success of this pilot and to continuing to work with EllisDon and Tomlinson to support the commercial launch of BGS’s graphene products over time.”
