The Bryan City Council approved more than 16 million US dollars in contracts as part of a major initiative to secure the city's water future to drill four new fountains near Lake Bryan.

The wells must be in operation within three years in order to meet the regulations of the Brazos Valley Groundwater Conservation District, but the director of public work, Jayson Barfknecht, expects construction to be required much faster than the period.

“You know that the idea behind it is again to provide water that meets today's needs but will also be needed in the future,” said Barfknecht.

The city has already held a meeting in front of the construction with a provider who wants to start two fountains in mid -October and expects it to complete it by October 2026. The city meets this week with the second contractor and expects a similar schedule for completion.

The four new fountains will significantly strengthen Bryan's water capacity and deliver about 13 million gallons a day additional water supply. The city is currently around 11 million gallons a day, with the use of the summer between 20 and 22 million gallons per day.

Despite the increased capacity, Barfknecht emphasized the importance of the continued water protection efforts of both the residents and the city.

“And you know we will look for, I imagine in the city to think about how we can give tips on water protection and develop development for which there may not be so much water for landscape design,”, said Barfknecht.
