According to state-run China News Services, China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) announced on November 22 a plan to build the integrated plant, which aims to experiment with deep-sea renewable energy off the coast of Guangdong province.
However, it is becoming necessary to move offshore facilities further out to sea to avoid obstructing important shipping routes, ports and fisheries.
Chinese researchers have examined the possibility of building integrated deep-sea energy islands as part of their renewable energy strategy.
The huge artificial island would be connected to large deep-sea offshore wind turbines. It would store the electricity generated and use it for seawater desalination and the production of hydrogen and hydrogen-based derivatives, which could be shipped back to the mainland as clean fuel.
