Almost a dozen members of the development team on Monday at 12 p.m., including Conncorp CEO Erik Clemons and Vice President of Immobilien, Ian Williams, fit in white hard hats and yellow vests to visit the active construction site. General Contractor Whiting tournament's building crew has already placed the foundations of the new Conncat office there and is preparing to install steel frames in the southern part of the location.
While this construction work is underway, Conncorp has carried out a different kind of renovation that promises to act as transformatively to the neighborhood and New Haven as a whole.
This is the planned New Construction Academy of the Organization, which Conncorp and Conncat want to start in mid -April.
The academy is based on a newly built classroom under the ground in the former Hill Health Clinic building on the corner of Dixwell and Charles, which marks the northeastern edge of the renovation of the Dixwell Plaza.
In this classroom, the senior trainer Pat Medor and the program director Steve Driffin will monitor the training of a 20-school cohort in the skills that are necessary to use certified plumber, electrician, carpenter and HVAC Technician.
The program complements other efforts for adults already made by Conncat, including in the areas of medical accounts and coding, phlebotomy, bioscience and culinary arts.
Medor, a general entrepreneur who heads a company called Genexo Associates, said that the school will meet twice a week for three hours a day over 22 weeks.
Driffin said that everyone from the age of 18 with a high school degree or Ged is cordially invited to apply. New Haven Residency is preferred, but not necessary. The program is free, although interested students have to apply.
Clemons said that the program has already received more than 40 applications a few days after Conncorp had announced the efforts.
Clemons said that the building academy has been in the works for about a year.
