Citations removed, records missing
OSHA issued more than $400,000 in fines and citations to the tunneling startup, prompting a meeting between company officials and Lombardo's office, Fortune reported Wednesday. The subpoenas were revoked after the meeting, but recordings of the meeting also disappeared shortly afterward, the report said.
The Boring Co., OSHA and the Nevada governor's office did not immediately respond To the gasolinePlease comment.
“There is a defined process and we did not follow it,” an OSHA official quoted in the report said anonymously, adding that the decision came “from above the agency.”
Terry WilliamsA spokesman for OSHA and the Nevada State Department cited in the report blamed errors for the disappearance, adding that the citations did not meet legal requirements and should not have been issued. Williams also said in the report that an amended file was added with the line entry about the meeting.
Permanent scars, lax security
The quotes come from two firefighters who reported an irritating feeling on their skin after conducting a training exercise for a rescue operation in the tunnels. They spent two hours in the tunnel. According to OSHA findings, the firefighters' skin was permanently scarred.
“We didn't know the chemicals were dangerous,” said a firefighter quoted in the report, talking about the sludge in the tunnels that reportedly disfigured firefighters' skin.
An anonymous employee mentioned in the report said workers tried to clean up the mud fluid before drilling, but “the constant flow from the machine” made it difficult. The employee added that workers deal with the liquid “on a daily basis.”
Company employees also complained about a lack of safety protocols and training, adding that chemical burns occur on the site “daily.”
Fine for boring company
The news comes as the tunneling startup was recently fined over $500,000 for dumping tunnel fluid down the shafts in Las Vegas Clark County Water Treatment District (CCWRD). The authority said it had to remove 12 cubic meters of drilling mud and other waste from one of its wastewater treatment plants as a result of the discharges.
Individualized transport, Putin-Trump tunnel
Now it is Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ:TSLA) The CEO recently floated the idea of “individualized mass transit” as the company nears completion of the Las Vegas Convention Center Loop. The company plans to build over 68 miles of tunnels in Las Vegas, with over 55 stations planned in the completed loop as well as a planned Dubai Loop.
“You can’t have 3D buildings and expect a 2D transportation system to be effective!” Musk said, explaining that the fastest way to get around is to use capsules/cars in vacuum tunnels.
Elsewhere, a Russian official recently urged Musk to build a “Putin-Trump” tunnel under the Bering Strait connecting Alaska and Russia, hailing it as a “symbol of unity” that would stretch about 70 miles.
