Experts in car insurance share the importance of secure driving through construction zones

Lexington, Ky. (WKYT) – If the weather continues to run out, we may recognize more constructions in our communities.

With many of these construction sites that are set up along the streets, insurance experts remind everyone of the importance of safe driving habits by construction zones.

Maya Afilalo with Autoinsurance.com said that the crews are working on updating or making the streets for us, and we also have to keep an eye on your safety.

“To be on the direct, it can be a question of life or death,” she said.

Afilalo said that in the United States in 2023, 1 out of 10 workplace deaths from the occupational safety agency (OSHA) are due to vehicle raids.

She said that construction workers have a higher risk because many of them work close to the street.

“I think the responsibility is really up to the drivers. If they are in a construction zone or street work takes place, it is always vigilant when driving, but especially pay attention to signage or instructions for reducing speed,” she said.

Afilalo said that reducing speed and limiting distractions such as telephone use or eating are the best ways to protect you and others while driving these zones.

“I think how 35 miles per hour, as soon as you have run through this speed, the likelihood of a crash increases when you hit someone who is fatal to increase a lot,” she said. “It is easy to forget that we are behind a bike with a 2,000 pound vehicle that could really hurt someone.”

Even if they are accelerated by a construction zone, Afilalo said that they can cost an even greater fine than to accelerate on a standard road.

According to Osha, there were 12 work -related deaths in which someone has been hit by a vehicle or a tractor trailer in Kentucky since 2017.
