First look at plans, renderings, time axis

According to the first design plans presented on Monday evening, the brand new Highland Highland High School will contain numerous natural light, modern common areas and multi-use classes.

The unveiling takes place almost a year after the voters had approved a bond of $ 730 million in order to finance “urgently needed” upgrades on both the Highland and the West High School.

The first to see the extensive plans were Highland students and their families, who gathered on Monday evening in a day of the school district in Salt Lake City, in which officials from the school district in Salt Lake City unveiled new 3D renderings.

The participants included the parents, Nicole Behrmann, who described the plans as “beautiful”. Behrmann has two children who are currently attending the Beacon Heights primary school. Your elder will start in Highland about a year before the new main building of the High School.

“It's time,” she said. “This building is ancient. I am looking forward to the children and I think it will really help you. [and] have a positive influence. “

The proportion of the construction costs of Highland is expected to be between 295 and 310 million US dollars. Officials from Naylor Wentworth Lund Architects, who was commissioned by the district to lead Highland's Redesign, said Salt Lake Tribune.

The most important change is planned for the main building of the high school: it is moved closer to 2100 South until the north end of the property. That will take about five years.

At the end of this time, the campus will describe an extra large high school, xeriscaped and water -efficient outdoor area and the architects as “Ram Hall”, named after the mascot of Highland.

The hall will combine two of the main inputs of the new building, said Philip Wentworth, deputy director of Naylor Wentworth Lund Architects.

He said they had to be creative with the room because he is sitting on a “10-foot slope”. In the end, architects have decided a combination of ramps and tiered platforms that contain seating where the students can make contacts, study or even eat for lunch.

The concept transforms a typical hallway into a more productive, social space, said Wentworth.

Overall, the design of Highland focuses on adaptability and functionality, say architects. For example, classrooms are built for several purposes, with functions such as built -in partition walls.

They were also designed for several teachers to use them, according to Architects. Instead of assigning a classroom, Highland teachers can have a separate office and switch over two or three classrooms all day, similar to a college environment.

This is a big change, but the district is already preparing to train it for best practice for the planned system, said district spokesman Yándary Chatwin on Monday.

Phase 1 of the Highland building is expected to be completed at the end of 2028. This includes all students and academic rooms.

If everything goes as planned, the students can enter a new campus in January 2029, according to Architects.

As soon as this is complete, phase 2 focuses on administrative offices, consulting rooms and the media center. Architects said that the construction is not expected to influence the learning of the students.

(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Elizabeth Grant, superintendent of Salt Lake City School District, visited on Monday, September 8, 2025, with guests at an open house, in which new plans for the Highland High School were presented.

The crews aim to complete this phase by autumn 2030. The new academic campus will be about as large as the current 400,040 square foot.

Officials of the event also found that geothermal energy will recharge the entire heating and cooling of the entire highlands with a mixture of solar and traditional stream for electricity.

Elizabeth Grant, superintendent of Salt Lake City School District, said that she visited the “simplicity of the floor plans” on Monday.

In contrast to the current school building, it believes that it feels more contiguous, which has seen many different additions over the years.

“I think people will be stunned, which it means to have a modern building like this in our district,” said Grant.

No portables for students

When the construction begins around March 2026, Highland students can be able to stay in the existing High School building instead of pulling them into portables.

Avoiding portable was a key factor in the decision of the Salt Lake City Education Committee to pursue the current reconstruction plan, with which the majority of the new building can be built before the current start was demolished.

In 2022, the school authority commissioned two separate feasibility studies for West and Highland High Schools. The studies were carried out by various architectural companies, with several community and staff meetings being held to collect contributions. The district also interviewed the residents and collected over 2,000 answers.

Paul Schulte, the then director of auxiliary services of the district, presented the results to the board in February 2023 and outlined several reconstruction options at various prices for Highland and West. Three options were proposed for Highland and four for west.

The board members completed both plans last December after the voters approved the bond to finance both reconstructions a month earlier.

The first designs for the West High School are expected to be presented on Tuesday during a separate open day at school.
