Habitat, Penn College honor Carter's legacy at a local construction site

Ground for Penn College's construction was broken in September, and by the end of the fall 2024 semester, students had practiced site planning, heavy construction equipment operation, concrete construction, masonry construction, and frame construction, completing the semester with a fully enclosed structure. Habitat staff installed underground utilities and Penn College General Services staff provided assistance.

“The 508 Fifth Avenue project home demonstrates the unique connections of education, service and real-world impact,” said Garret L. Graff, assistant professor of civil engineering and the school’s director of construction. “By working on this home with Habitat for Humanity staff and volunteers, Penn College students not only develop technical expertise: they learn the value of teamwork, resilience and contributing to something bigger than themselves. The finished home will be a testament to their hard work and the transformative power of community partnerships.”

The student work is intended to continue throughout the spring semester and the 2025–26 academic year, ultimately providing students in at least six Penn College majors—from architecture to heavy construction engineering and from civil engineering to electrical construction—invaluable experience in providing an affordable home for a needy one Family.
