The renovation of the Parkinson Recreation Center in Kelowna is expected to start building in spring.
With regard to the needs of the residents of Kelowna and the Greater Okanagan region, the design of the new recreational system and the campus is carried out by an integrated project enclosure process, with Diamond Schmitt leading the architecture design team with Stantec Architecture, Vogelbau and the city of Kelowna as a partner.
The design plans for the newly developed Parkinson's Recreation Center will increase programming, support health and wellness, enable rehabilitation and have local athletes champion. The project is accompanied by a park that is rich in public amenities and gathering rooms.
“As part of the building of a stronger Kelowna initiative, important milestones were achieved that were submitted to the renovation of the Parkinson Recreation Center with initial plans agreed by all partners, as well as a form for shape and character development,” said Derek Edstrom, Division Director, Partnerships and Investations. “These milestones bring the residents closer to a lively, older facility and a park that trigger active, creative possibilities that improve the quality of life for the entire community.”
The renovation of the Parkinson's Recreation Center has had a significant priority for the city of Kelowna for over a decade. If the facility is complete, the facility has five times more sporty space, 2.5 times more water and three times as many programs.
The amenities include a 25-meter pool of 10 Lenigern, a leisure pool, a whirlpool, a cold tunement, a steam bath, a sauna, three fitness studios in full size, a fitness center, a running/hiking trail, fitness studios, multi-purpose rooms, food services and the Orl express library and a committed childcare room.
A 19.4 hectare park comprises six sports fields, 24 pickle balls, connections to the Apple Bowl Stadium, Mill Creek Park Space and access to the Okanagan Rail Trail.
In 2023, the Council approved the financing of planning, design and building as part of the stronger Kelowna initiative.
