Link Bus Rapid Transit Contractor talks about the need for diversity in local construction | News

According to Rochester, Minn. Kenneth Bush is the only company that works in addition to Elcor Construction in the Link Bus Rapid Transit project.

He currently has 10 to 15 contractors who work with the main construction team to set up signage, obstacles and security markings in order to keep pedestrians away from the main project.

According to an inequality study in 2025 from the state of Minnesota, only 4 percent of the city's contracts have had construction companies or women.

He says that the city is expecting a Bauer boom in the next decade to make an investment in the construction capacity.

“I am a member of the local 405. We try our best to ensure that the people from the union come on site that they do not come from other places. We believe that we could build this capacity and build our local workforce by bringing people through training that would otherwise have no access to it,” said Bush.

One of the possibilities, as he believes that the city could help, are programs such as equity in the project of the built environment with Destination Medical Center.

In recent years he has announced that it has taught a dozen women with colors how to deal with their own companies.

While only a few have stayed in the industry, it is a good start to add new voices to the local building community.
