SmartPM technologies published the 2025 Construction planning reportAnalysis of more than 70,000 blueprints about the Scheding Intelligence ™ engine and collecting feedback from over 3,500 experts in the industry.
The report describes important topics and possibilities in the current planning practices and emphasizes the role of schedules as a critical but not busy project assistance. According to the SmartPM, improving the management of schedules could lead to better performance, predictability and profitability in the entire industry.
“This is not just another report – it is the first deepest insight into the data that drives every construction project, but rarely treats with the strategic importance it deserves,” said Michael Pink, CEO from Smartpm. “We bring this to light and the effects are massive.”
Report highlights
- 88% of the starting plans could not meet the high -quality benchmarks recognized by the industry.
- 63% of the experts stated a limited understanding or the use of their project plans.
- Only every fourth team reported the updated schedules on time.
- Although it is the top indicator for project health, the schedules are often separated from daily decision-making.
- Inconsistent time pland data contribute to confusion across the project functions from field operations to financial supervision.
Separation at the management level
The report also identifies a relevant gap between the use of schedules for strategic decisions and the reliability of the data behind it. While 75% of the respondents say that schedules are used in the decision -making of managers, 88% of these schedules do not correspond to fundamental quality standards.
“It is a classic case of blind spots at the top,” said Pink. “Managers make millions of dollars based on data that they consider healthy if this is not the case. This report shows how widespread this problem is and what the industry has to do to remedy this.”
The role of AI and data quality
Since artificial intelligence in construction work is becoming more common, the report shows an important problem: input data in poor quality will restrict the effectiveness of new technologies. Project schedule, which are often of central importance for AI models in the construction area, are only as useful as their accuracy.
“Everyone is excited about AI,” said Pink. “However, if we do not seriously take ourselves seriously with the improvement of the time pland data, AI will only automate faster decisions. SmartPM believes in 'responsible AI'. Responsible AI means to use artificial intelligence in a way that is transparent, precisely and to clean data, so that it provides real value without the results of unreales.”
Adaptation to a changing industry
The report combines poor planning practices with major challenges in construction, such as: B. Project complexity, shrinkage of margins and increasing demands of stakeholders. It is argued that the treatment of schedules as static documents contributes to costly delays and misunderstandings – and that schedules should act as dynamic operating systems for managing work in real time.
In addition to the diagnosis, the report explains how changes to the capital investments, workplace culture and visibility in the businesses begin to change the schedules perceived and used in the industry. Since more investment flows into the planning software, the industry is increasingly recognizing the need for better tools and more precise data.
A joint call for changes
The 2025 report contains entries from contractors, owners and consultants and reflects a comprehensive agreement on the importance of improving the schedule quality. Since digital tools are becoming more central to the project provision, the value gains more precise and timely schedule data a broader confirmation.
“This report is a must,” said Alex Teplitxky, SVP marketing at SmartPM. “There is a common language and a clear starting point for the responsibility of the schedule and better results.”
“The companies that will lead the next decade of the year of construction not only use more technicians, but also use better data. This report accuses the base light on the basis for every successful project and offers a roadmap for the trust of the schedules trustingly, visible and implementable.”
