Oman reveals plan for the nation's first 3D printed mosque in Dhofar

The project is part of the Dahariz Waterfront Development Plan in Salalah, a broader initiative to combine modern urban planning with sustainable and cultural design.

The agreement was signed in the presence of Sayyid Marwan Bin Turki al, the governor of Dhofar, and includes the collaboration between the municipality of Dhofar, Innotech Oman and the Oday architecture, according to the Oman News Agency (Ona).

Innotech Oman, a local pioneer in 3D printing for the construction, will build the mosque in collaboration with Oday Architecture. The design of the structure is based on a spiral band shape that generates shady sidewalks and embroidered green areas around the main building.

According to the municipality of Dhofar, Dr. Ahmed bin Mohsen Al Ghassani, the project reflects the governor's vision for “innovative urban spaces that express Islamic identity and at the same time use sustainability”.

He added: “This mosque will be characterized as a spiritual, architectural and cultural landmark along Dahariz Beach”, which emphasizes that the 3D printing reduces material waste, accelerating the construction and improving the integration of natural light and renewable energies.

The design of the mosque contains energy sector systems that rely on movement, wind and sunlight. The oval prayer hall will contain a central oculus that filters natural light and symbolizes the divine guidance.

The minaret, which is inspired by both the Omani sail and the traditional incense burner, is crowned with a crescent moon to present a mixture of modern engineering and cultural heritage.

Al Ghassani found that the surrounding landscape will use salt and wind-resistant plants in order to reconcile with the environmental priorities of DHOFL and to strengthen the sustainable urban identity of the governor.
