WEST CONSHOHOCKEN, PA – The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) has announced continued overnight construction to improve safety and infrastructure on Interstate 476 (Blue Route) and the Schuylkill Expressway (I-76). The extensive project, spanning nearly 17 miles, aims to provide major road and structural improvements between the I-76 interchange in West Conshohocken Borough, Montgomery County, and the I-95 interchange in Ridley Township, Delaware County, to address.
Construction is scheduled for the week of December 16-20 and will be carried out overnight to minimize disruption during peak travel times. Due to ongoing work, lanes will be closed from 8:00 p.m. to 5:00 a.m. the next morning. Specific details of the closures include:
- I-476, northbound and southboundbetween the I-76 and I-95 interchanges, there will be lane closures due to tree trimming, guardrail replacement and access upgrades.
- I-76 (Schuylkill Expressway), eastbound and westboundbetween Matsonford Road and I-476, there will be lane closures due to necessary bridge repairs.
Motorists are asked to expect significant delays and congestion when traveling through these construction zones. To mitigate potential disruptions, travelers are encouraged to plan ahead and allow extra time for their commutes.
This ambitious project includes a comprehensive series of upgrades. PennDOT's contractor will perform key tasks such as milling and overlaying lanes and shoulders, repairing 49 structures, resolving rock slope stabilization issues and improving 21 stormwater management basins. Additional work includes repairing sound barriers, replacing damaged inlets, installing updated guard rails, signage, rumble strips and new pavement markings.
The goal of this comprehensive initiative is twofold. Firstly, it aims to extend the life of the design and improve the highway ride quality. Secondly, there are roadside elements such as drainage systems, guardrails and signage, which are currently in poor condition. By modernizing these components, PennDOT aims to improve motorist safety and optimize roadway functionality in the coming years.
H&K Group, Inc., based in Skippack, PA, is serving as the project's general contractor. The $83.6 million initiative is funded entirely by federal funds.
While the physical construction component is expected to be completed by the end of 2025, this week's overnight work represents an important step toward achieving the project's long-term goals. Residents and commuters traversing this region can expect temporary inconvenience, but will ultimately benefit from safer and benefit from improved travel conditions once the modernizations are completed.
