Job Overview

We are looking for a communications professional to join a dynamic team with multiple partners as a communications officer. This position is responsible for developing and implementing strategic communications plans, developing supporting materials and conducting media relations. The incumbent will be a tenacious “reporter” who ferrets out stories, details and facts, who is able to transform complex information into understandable content, and who is able to work collaboratively with state and national partners.

The Civil servant, communication, environment Reporting to the Senior Manager, Communications, based in Pew's Washington, DC offices, the position will participate in Pew's main office days on Tuesdays and Wednesdays and have the flexibility to work from home the remainder of the week.

In this role you will:

  • Develop, manage, and implement communications plans to effectively and strategically amplify Pew's disaster resiliency and clean energy work, and to support the work of its partners and affected or targeted communities.
  • Work closely with partner organizations to identify and coordinate external dissemination of news and stories.
  • Identify, develop and place stories and announcements in the regional and national press for resiliency or energy modernization projects.
  • Utilize strong interpersonal and organizational skills, as well as writing and editing skills to assist with content, special projects and events.

The US Conservation Resilience Work

The Pew Charitable Trusts work with communities and federal, state, tribal and local governments to find ways to become more resilient to climate-related risks and disasters such as fires, floods, droughts, landslides and other life-threatening events.

Energy modernization work

The Energy Modernization Project works with state and federal policymakers to advance the country's transition to electric vehicles. build a clean, reliable power grid; and expanding renewable energy solutions such as offshore wind energy. Pew advocates for change in state and federal policy, conducts research to address critical gaps, and convenes and mobilizes key stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Works closely with program, communications staff, and other partner organizations to collaboratively develop and expand materials to support partners' goals.
  • Writes and edits visually appealing communications materials such as blogs, fact sheets, communications toolkits, social media posts, press releases, and other materials for public distribution.
  • Identifies, develops and presents newsworthy stories and its partners to media outlets; Mentors program employees on media relations tools and best practices as needed.
  • Tracks metrics and contributes to reports by summarizing key communications activities and analysis.
  • Identifies and creates opportunities for Pew speakers to engage stakeholders at online and in-person events.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree or equivalent experience and typically eight years' experience in positions with communications responsibilities, with significant project management experience required.
  • Demonstrated experience working in coalitions or with multiple partner organizations.
  • Demonstrated experience in political advocacy communications at the state and local levels.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills; practiced at developing uncomplicated, clear and convincing content.
  • Demonstrated experience writing story-driven content on complex technical topics and projects in a variety of formats (e.g. newsletters, case studies, news stories, editorials, blogs, videos, photo essays, one-pagers).
  • Earned media experience with existing relationships with media companies in the clean energy or disaster resilience space is a plus.
  • Demonstrated time and project management skills, including the ability to juggle and meet multiple deadlines by maintaining a high level of organization and setting priorities effectively.
  • Demonstrated experience in environmental or clean energy communications is preferred.

Travel

  • This position may involve domestic travel to attend meetings and conferences.

Compensation

  • Salary range $97,800 – $109,300
    • The salary range represents a reasonable estimate of annual salary based on Pew's commitment to providing fair and market-competitive compensation. The actual salary offered takes into account many factors including, but not limited to, job-related knowledge, skills and experience, internal pay equity and business needs.
