The Vietnamese architect wins the global price for working with ethnic mountain communities

The 2025 award was awarded to the 54-year-old Vice President of the Vietnam Association of Architects and lecturer on May 7th at Hanoi University of Civil Engineering in Venice, lecturer.

Hao is generally seen as a pioneer in humanistic and sustainable architecture in Vietnam.

His projects symbolize the exchange of knowledge and cultural respect with its sustainable projects in ethnic and mountain communities.

In the past two decades, he has developed community -centered architectural works that integrate nature and local cultures into the central regions in many places between the rocky highlands of Ha Giang.

At the award ceremony, he said: “Architecture is not just about constructing buildings, but also about the design of people and communities. We do not create an architecture to satisfy the architect's ego, but to connect, listen and work together.”

Hao was born in Hanoi and completed in 1992 at the Hanoi University of Civil Engineering in Vietnam and 2003 in Italy in Italy.

In 2003 he founded the architecture company 1+1> 2, which focused on the support of disadvantaged communities and the promotion of cultural diversity in the middle of the fast urbanization of Vietnam.

As a professor of architecture and urban planning, he has given lectures at renowned institutions around the world since 2003, including the Art Institute of Chicago, the National University of Singapore, the Institute for Contemporary Art in Berlin, the Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts, the Yale University, Cornell University and Tsinghua University.

His long list of awards includes the UIA Prize in 1996, the Civic and Community Award of the World Architecture Festival in 2015, the Vietnamese architect of 2015, the gold price at Vietnam Green Architecture in 2016 and the Vassilis Sgoutas Prize for the implemented architecture in 2017.

Haos Engagement for Integrative and Sustainable Development extends to various initiatives such as the board member of the Youth Union (1995–2019), vice president of the Vietnam Association of Architects (2020-inongoing) and the chief architect of the Vietnam Association of Architects (2020-inongoing) and the main architect of the “Schools for impoverished children in rural area “(2014-).

He has made efforts to design and build schools in the northern region of the mountain region, and will be head of the private fund for community architecture from 2015.

The Global Award for Sustainable Architecture, which was founded in 2006 by the architect and scholar Jana Revedin, recognizes Champions of Sustainable Development that pursue a participatory design approach to meet social needs.
