A Donald Trump presidential memo has set the efforts of the professional and health administration to determine national heat safety regulations, indefinitely and endangered millions of employees.
Jeremy Lindenfeld reports for Capital & Main.
Consoling:
- Trump's guideline of January 20 frozen all upcoming federal regulation creation, including the proposed regulations for the heat security of Osha.
- The rule that was promoted by workers would have obliged the employers to provide water, shadow and breaks when the temperatures reached 90 degrees.
- Some Republicans also try to completely abolish the Osha and to pronounce further concerns about the safety of employees.
Key quotation:
“I would characterize it as a class war. There are rich people who sacrifice the life of the workers just so that they can save Pennys on the dollar because they do not provide water, shadow or rest breaks. “
– Antonio de Loera, communication director of United Farm Workers
Why does that count:
Heat -related diseases kill dozens of workers every year, with thousands of other serious injuries. Climate change drives more extreme temperatures and makes protection in the workplace even more urgent. Without security measures, agricultural workers, construction industry, warehouses and other in need of protection, are exposed to increased risks, especially in states without their own heat security laws. The Osha had worked on a national standard for years, but with this disused process of regulation, employees may have little recourse to dangerous conditions.
