As we approach the finale, it seems so Countryman Season 1 ends on a cliffhanger with the drug cartel either trying to hurt Tommy Norris or kidnapping one of his children to send a loud and clear message. [Spoiler Alert] The end of episode 8 somehow confirms my belief as Tommy and Monty had accidentally declared war on the cartel by dropping bombs on their convoy and such an attack will have some serious consequences. The cartel is already angered by Tommy's behavior as their men demanded compensation from Tommy and Monty for the damage they suffered from the plane accident in the first episode. But yes, Tommy has faced all sorts of threats in his “130-year” career, and he will find a way out of this one too, so until then, let's examine everything that happened Countryman Episode 8.
Cooper gives Rebecca a taste of her own medicine
In the previous episode, I speculated that Rebecca, being Rebecca, would try to intimidate Cooper and blame him for the workers' deaths so that she could force Ariana to sign the mourning offer. And that's exactly what happened. Rebecca threatened Cooper that if he didn't convince the grieving widow to sign the papers, she would launch a criminal investigation against him. However, Cooper didn't move. He wasn't going to let a city lawyer teach him the law, especially when he knew the pumpjack explosion wasn't the workers' fault. It was Monty and his company's fault since none of their oil wells met OSHA standards. The Medinas were trying to open (or close) a rusty valve when the explosion occurred, and the only person responsible for their deaths was Monty.
Still, Cooper knew that he or Ariana wouldn't win a lawsuit against the Goliath, so he made a counteroffer that the company would have to pay all three families 1 million each to compensate them for their loss. And if they refused, they would file environmental lawsuits and require TCEQ to conduct a safety audit of the M-TEX equipment, which Monty had already said did not meet OSHA standards. Even if Ariana and Cooper didn't win the lawsuit, Cooper would make sure they dragged Monty and his M-TEX down with them. Well, Rebecca knew it would cost her more than what the grieving families were demanding, forcing Rebecca to accept her defeat, even if she didn't take it lightly. In the end, Ariana signed the papers and with Cooper's help, she eventually became a millionaire. Also, Cooper quit his job because Monty would have fired him anyway after the whole fiasco.
Monty has a small heart attack
Monty, who had been drinking herbal tea to live healthily at the beginning of the episode, began hyperventilating after Cooper's betrayal. Well, no rich man takes defeat lightly, and Monty has already been under a lot of stress lately with losing money from all sides. He called Tommy but couldn't tell him anything about the stunt his son had done. However, he really wanted to get it out of his system, so he called again from the hospital, which made Tommy realize that things had really gotten out of control.
And because I forgot to mention the two main highlights of the show, here they are: Angela took the nursing home residents on a quick trip to the arcade. And later that day, Ainsley went out for some “Bible reading” with her new boyfriend Ryder Sampson. This subplot will sooner or later give Tommy a heart attack too.
The Texas National Guard arrives with the M-Tex patch
At the beginning of the episode, Monty asked the governor to use his land for military training, which would in some ways keep the cartel in check. Well, the problem here was that the troops were constantly firing guns and dropping bombs during military maneuvers. That means that if stray bullets or artillery ever hit an oil well, there would be fireworks everywhere in broad daylight, and Monty would do that. I can't afford that. Well, it seems like he has a plan. He offered the Texas National Guard a piece of land in Odessa that was away from any oil rigs. Later, Monty's countryman Tommy escorted Colonel Ivey and his convoy to the land where Monty had promised the National Guard could establish a training base.
Tommy threatens Rebecca
Before meeting Rebecca at the Patch, Tommy made a quick stop at Ariana's to understand what's really going on between her and his son Cooper. Well, it turns out that even Ariana wasn't sure about her feelings for Cooper, but she knew that no one had ever looked at her the way Cooper did, not even her dead husband. Well, the detour was worth it to make it clear to Tommy that the two are in love, even if they don't want to put a name tag on it yet.
Tommy finally arrived at the patch to hear what Rebecca had to say. He already knew that her ego was hurt and that she was looking for ways to get revenge. But before she could speak any further, Tommy simply said in very clear and simple terms that if she dared to target his family, she would face his wrath first. He doesn't care what degree she has or what law firm she works for because he will show her her place. And it's not because he was Cooper's father. That's because Cooper didn't do anything wrong. The family that had sent their loved ones to work at the well deserved compensation, and no one, not even Monty himself, could put a price tag on the lives lost through their own failure. In short, if Rebecca really wants to take up this futile fight because her ego was hurt, it won't end well for her.
35. drops a bomb on the cartel
Colonel Ivey had told Tommy that they were planning to deploy an attack helicopter unit, and I suspect they had already begun bomb-drop training. Well, they pranked Monty and Tommy if no one else.
In Countryman At the end of episode 8, the cartel was smuggling drugs through the barren piece of land that Monty had presumably loaned to the National Guard for their training. Before the cartel men could leave the location, some began dropping bombs that caused one of the cartel's drug vehicles to explode. The bombings not only destroyed their product but also killed their men instantly. Judging by the pilot's reaction, it didn't appear to be a planned attack. But the cartel wouldn't see it that way. They will obviously believe that Monty and Tommy sent the US military to get rid of them and that this act of bombing their men and vehicles was nothing less than a declaration of war. If they saw it that way, they would retaliate, and it would be Tommy who might have to pay the price for someone else's mistake.
